Up-and-coming Austrian bass-baritone Daniel Gutmann studies singing with Julia Bauer-Huppmann at Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts, completing graduating with a Master’s degrees in opera as well as Lied and Oratorio.
He grew up in Herzogenburg in Lower Austria and it was there that he received his earliest training as a musician and as a singer. While still at school he was already studying singing at the St. Pölten Diocesan Concervatory and also began to study the classical concert guitar at Vienna’s Universtiy of Muisc.
He made his operatic debut in 2013 as Don Alfonso (Cosi fan tutte) at the Salzkammergut Festival in Gmunden. In 2015 he played Demetrius in the Vienna University of Music’s production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and in 2016 he delighted audiences as Leporello (Don Giovanni) at the Schönbrunn Palace Theatre, where he was also acclaimed in the main role of Buonafede in Haydn’s Il mondo della luna, a part he also sang at the Hainburg Kulturfabrik. Since the end of 2016 he has been a member of the Animato Music Theatre that offers workshops for children in Austria and Germany. In 2017 he undertook concert tours as a soloist to New York and Washington, while other engagements took him to Singapore and to Zürich for the Free Opera Company’s production of Stephen Storace’s Gli equivoci.

Daniel Gutmann’s versatility is also reflected in his activities as manager and frontman for his band The Groovecake Factory and in is degree in sports science from the University of Vienna.
In 2018 Daniel Gutmann returned to New York and the East coast of America with a solo programme. He also gave song recitals all over Austria, including the Traisental Cultural Festival in Schloss Walpersdorf in Lower Austria, appeared in Leo Fall’s operetta Die Kaiserin at the Baden Stadttheater and was heard as Toante in Handel’s Oreste at the Schönbrunn Palace Theatre. In September 2018, following his Salzburg Festival debut in Der Prozess, he appeared in the children’s opera production of Haydn’s Welt auf dem Mond at the jOPERA Festival in Jennersdorf. During 2018/19 season he will be singing with the Vienna Kammeroper.
